What makes a job "sexy"? What makes a company "sexy"? I've been at tech week in Chicago and have seen so many people who want to be in a "hot" industry and create the next great thing has gotten me thinking. People who think their idea is so wonderful...and that creating and building a brand and a company is so easy...are really missing the point. While there are a select few who hit the jack pot, the majority of people are always in search, rather than trying to execute what's in front of them.
As Jason Fried said this morning, an idea won't pay for your sandwich at Subway.
Creating a REVENUE GENERATING profitable company is really hard work. One of the pitfalls of the technology generation, is that so many people think that creation is easy and execution is done by others. Boring is in the eye of the beholder. Is working with good people boring? Is having a steady pay check boring? Is helping your client/customer boring? Execution is hard. Managing is hard. Growth and development is hard.
When you look in the mirror, the most important question you have to ask is..are you good? Are good at what you do? What do you need to do to be better? Are your customers, either internally or externally, happy with you? Are they only using you to get what they need? Few companies and people can answer yes to the last question...you just may not know it.
If your customer, whether you're an accountant, an administrative assistant, a programmer, a salesperson...if your boss or client needs to go to someone other than you to get something done-- you need to ask why aren't they coming to you?
Stop worrying about being in a HOT industry or company...and start worrying about how you can be the best executor of ideas in whatever you do. The ability to execute quickly is the most valuable skill set.
